Indiana State Mathematics Contest – April 23, 2005
Dear Mathematics Teachers and Coordinators:
The Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics is pleased to inform you that the 2005 Indiana State Mathematics Contest will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2005.
This annual contest is sponsored by the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) and governed by policies approved by ICTM. For more information or to be added to the mailing list, please contact a local site coordinator. We hope that you will encourage your students to participate in the 2005 contest.
Time and Place
The Contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at the 14 sites listed below. Students should be in their seats at 9:20 am local time to fill out forms.
Categories, Format and Content
There are five mathematics problem-solving tests. Each contains 32 to 40 multiple-choice questions; 90 minutes are allowed for students to work with the test. The categories are: Pre-Algebra, Algebra First Course/Integrated Math I, Geometry/Integrated Math II, Algebra Second Course/Integrated Math III, and Comprehensive. Questions for the first four categories may be related to the content identified in the Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics in the obvious ways, or included in State-adopted textbooks. The content of the Comprehensive contest is drawn from pre-calculus mathematics including trigonometry, finite mathematics, simple linear algebra, probability, statistics, and analytic geometry.
Participants
The contest is open to any middle school, junior high school or senior high school student in the state of Indiana. Participation on the part of any interested student is encouraged; there is no limit to the number of participants from any school. A participant -- defined as “a student who has finished/ will finish the given subject during the present school year”-- may take only one test each year.
· Participants in Pre-Algebra are limited to Middle School and Junior High School students who have not yet enrolled in Algebra or an integrated high school mathematics course; students can take it as many times as they like.
· Students who are enrolled in either an Algebra First Course or Integrated Mathematics First Course will register for the Algebra I/Integrated Math I test.
· Students enrolled in Geometry or Integrated Mathematics II will register for the Geometry/Integrated Math II test.
· Students enrolled in either Algebra Second Course or Integrated Mathematics III will register for the Algebra II/Integrated Math III test.
· The Comprehensive test is taken by students above the Algebra II level. A student can take the Comprehensive test more than once, in a different year.
Students can participate only one time in each of the Algebra I First Course/Integrated Math I, Geometry/Integrated Math II, or Algebra II/Integrated Math III categories. Students can participate in the Pre-Algebra and Comprehensive categories more than once.
Registration, Certification and Fees
There is a non-refundable $4.00 participant fee for each student. Participants must be registered by their school, and the school must certify that the participants are currently enrolled in courses appropriate for the category. No special certification is required for the Comprehensive category.
Please click here to print registration forms send all completed registration forms and fees to your local site. The fees and completed registration forms should be received by the local site coordinator by March 18, 2005.
CHECKS SHOULD BE MADE PAYABLE TO ICTM.
Calculators, Cell Phones and Pagers
Cell Phones and Pagers must be turned off during the test. All tests are written with the assumption that each student has a scientific calculator available for use. Participants must provide their own calculators. A calculator may be used, but the TI-89 or above will not be acceptable, nor will any HP equivalents (HP 48G or HP 49G or any variations of those with those initial codes). However, a common scientific calculator with memory and pre-calculus functions should be sufficient.
Sponsors and Transportation
A sponsor designated by their school must accompany participants. Transportation to and from the contest is the responsibility of the school and participant. Any sponsor who could help monitor testing on the day of the contest would be appreciated.
Special Needs
Participants that require any special needs must contact the local site coordinator at least one week in advance.
Recognition and Awards
Each participant will receive a Certificate of Participation. Each student answering 75% or more of the test questions correctly, or who places in the top 20% of the students in attendance in that subject at that site, will be designated a Scholar and will receive a certificate.
Each student who scores among the top 5% throughout the state will be designated an Outstanding Scholar and will receive both a medal and a certificate. The top two students in each subject area on the state level will also be recognized. A recognition ceremony for Outstanding Scholars and their teachers will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at the Indiana State House in Indianapolis( North Atrium). Outstanding Scholars will be notified in May of the time and location of the ceremony. Certificates and medals for student who cannot attend the ceremony will be sent to their homes. A list of all Outstanding Scholars will be published by ICTM in the Fall of 2005.
