Indiana State Mathematics Contest – April 24, 2004
Dear Mathematics Teacher:
The Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics is pleased to inform you that the 2004 Indiana State Mathematics Contest will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2004.
This annual contest is sponsored by the Indiana Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) and governed by policies approved by ICTM. For more information or to be added to the mailing list, please contact a local site coordinator. We hope that you will encourage your students to participate in the 2004 contest.
Time and Place
The Contest will begin at 9:30 a.m. local time on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the 14 sites listed in this announcement.
Categories, Format and Content
There are five mathematics problem-solving tests. Each contains 36 to 60 multiple-choice questions; 90 minutes are allowed for students to work with the test. The categories are: Pre-Algebra, Algebra First Course/Integrated Math I, Geometry/Integrated Math II, Algebra Second Course/Integrated Math III, and Comprehensive. Questions for the first four categories may be related to the content identified in the Indiana Academic Standards for Mathematics in the obvious ways, or included in State-adopted textbooks. The content of the Comprehensive contest is drawn from pre-calculus mathematics including trigonometry, finite mathematics, simple linear algebra, probability, statistics, and analytic geometry.
Recognition and Awards
Each participant will receive a Certificate of Participation. Site Awards will be given to the top three ranking students (plus any ties) in each of the five categories. Each student answering 75% or more of the test questions correctly, or who places in the top 15% of the students in attendance in that subject at that site, will be designated a Scholar and will receive a certificate.
Each student who scores among the top 5% throughout the state will be designated an Outstanding Scholar and will receive both a medal and a certificate. The top two students in each subject area on the state level will also be recognized. A recognition ceremony for Outstanding Scholars and their teachers will be held on June 15, 2004, at the Indiana State House in Indianapolis. Outstanding Scholars will be notified in May of the time and location of the ceremony. Certificates and medals for student who cannot attend the ceremony will be sent to their homes. A list of all Outstanding Scholars will be published by ICTM in the Fall of 2004.
